Harris Museum and Art Gallery, Preston: Global Threads: Asian Textiles and Fashion Today 14 May 2011 – 30 June 2012. Global Threads is a ground-breaking new fashion exhibition co-curated by young people from Lancashire. It mixes historic South Asian textiles with today’s catwalk, high street and student fashion.
The exhibition is inspired by a beautiful 18-volume set of fabric sample books – The Textile Manufactures of India – given to Preston in 1866. Many of the patterns, materials and techniques found in this collection are still in use today. Young curators have brought together a truly exclectic mix of men’s and women’s wear – from George at Asda to Dries Van Noten – to show how even the latest trentds reflect a global textile culture. You’ll also find photography by Gavin Fernandes and artwork from Shezad Dawood. See a video of stills from the show.
Young people have catalogued and photographed all 700 fabric samples in The Textile Manufactures of India. You can explore them on this website: www.tmoi.org.uk
